Ken Freeman – The Staines Bull
Story Paul Huggett Photos: John Nunn, Stock Car Racing News, Phil Chapman collection.
When Sunbury on Thames garage proprietor Ken Freeman and his racing mechanic Don Roomes pulled into the pits at their local track, Staines Stadium, on London’s westward fringes, on Good Friday 1960, they probably didn’t think of themselves as trendsetters. Having spent the latter half of the previous season trying to get the hang of the new “Special” they had created for Stock Car competition – and there was only one class of stadium motor sport at the time, with rules as close as they could be to unlimited – they could hardly have expected the massive success the next few weeks would bring, either.

Against All Odds
Britain’s Only Lady Promoter looks set for Britain’s Biggest Stock Car Meeting, despite losing virtually everything in a fire at Skegness stadium.

That Smyth Racing
Stuart Smyth has been racing Stock Rods for a number of years in some very smart cars. Paul Huggett hopes to catch up with him for a story on That Smyth Racing!

Swap Shop
Lee Guinchard and fellow F2 start Jim Bamford were two notable transfers from F2 to Spedeworth Superstox. Anne Sayell looks at the two drivers backgrounds.

New kid on the Block
“Nobody ever said life was easy,” remarked Kevin Harvick at Rockingham, North Carolina on February 23 of this year, “but this is the hardest thing that’s ever happened in my life.” Of course Harvick, 25, was talking about the situation he found himself in before the second Winston Cup race of the year, filling the shoes of a NASCAR legend twice his age and with twice his experience, in the late Dale Earnhardt, at Richard Childress Racing.

COLUMNS
John Hyam discusses various aspects of the sport, plus Freddie Parsons who has been re-united with his 1935 Hudson Coupe.

Paul Huggett – racing the GT Hot Rod, morons who trashed the men’s toilets at some point during the night, and lots more…
