When Sunbury on Thames garage proprietor Ken Freeman and his racing mechanic Don Roomes pulled into the pits at their local track, Staines Stadium, on London’s westward fringes, on Good Friday 1960, they probably didn’t think of themselves as trendsetters. Having spent the latter half of the previous season trying to get the hang of the new “Special” they had created for Stock Car competition – and there was only one class of stadium motor sport at the time, with rules as close as they could be to unlimited – they could hardly have expected the massive success the next few weeks would bring, either.

“Nobody ever said life was easy,” remarked Kevin Harvick at Rockingham, North Carolina on February 23 of this year, “but this is the hardest thing that’s ever happened in my life.” Of course Harvick, 25, was talking about the situation he found himself in before the second Winston Cup race of the year, filling the shoes of a NASCAR legend twice his age and with twice his experience, in the late Dale Earnhardt, at Richard Childress Racing.
