Long Riders # 3 – Horry Barnes
It’s safe to say there are few, if any, regular stock car racers anywhere in the World who can outrank Horace ‘Horry’ Barnes, legendary Norfolk driver, enthusiast, raconteur and folk-hero, in terms of years and good times passed. 73 next birthday, the ruddy complexioned white-bearded pilot of the funky number 6 Datsun Saloon Stock Car would pass, if clad in a red cloak rather than blue overalls, as everyone’s idea of good ol’ Santa Claus himself; and, lifelong grafter that he is, Horry would probably tackle the midwinter presents run with all the determination and good humour that he has lived the rest of his full life so far! Of his first contact with Stock Car racing, Horry told us: “We went to Norwich, the old stadium there, to have a look, and sort of got involved. That was 1954. I think old ‘Bozzy’ Bosworth ran the track, and he lived on the premises in a caravan. I bought a car off somebody, it was an old Chevy, and off we went.” Read the full story in the September issue by Paul Huggett

Sixteen and Rising
Not yet old enough to drive on the road, but Andrew Miller has already graduated from Junior to Senior racing – and he wants more. For such a youthful racer, he knows where he wants to go. “Hot Rods. Spedeworth or Northampton, I don’t mind, but there’s a lot more action on the ovals – ASCAR would be good!”

The Leedell Family
Alwalton Raceway has a history of family involvement but on the racing side none quite so large as the Leedell family. That’s five brothers, one brother-in-law, one brother’s son and one cousin, and they all race in the same formula, apart from the two Juniors, so you can bet the atmosphere is a bit tense after a crash around the family homes after race day. Father Roger and mother Beryl have their work cut out keeping the peace. Story Alan Wilkinson

Goodwood Festival of Speed 2001
Oversized, Overpowered and Over Here! The cars and stars from America’s legendary NASCAR series were once again among the host of racing personalities and spectacular vehicles drawing the crowds to the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. Story Dee Hallett
