National Hot Rods fans will love this issue, with a 5 page full colour preview to the National Hot Rod World Championship and Spedeweekend. Hot Rods have firther coverage with the Race Action Update including Jock Burgoyne’s big accident on May 7th at Hednesford Hills, plus a two page Scenes from the Past featuring Hot Rods from 1981.

Jim Rickard – Long Riders #2
Dirt track hero, and a man who will help anyone out, any time, plus a test drive in his Peugeot/Vauxhall Super Saloon. He got his first race in a car borrowed from Superstox racer Derek Beadle, who had gone fishing for the day.
Jim raced it, and Jim crashed it. Luckily he had a Triumph Herald on the road, and was able to substitute some of his own cars suspension bits before the Angling Beadle came home. Many years on, Rickard still races at “The Farm”, as does 22 year old son Steve.

Mallory Park
The annual Oval Invasion of the Mallory Mile took place on May 20 and quite a few had made the dash over from Northampton’s Saturday night meeting to stay the night ready for Sunday’s 9.30 practice. Incarace and Spedeworth worked together in a joint presentation which provided a brilliant day out and was a tremendous advertisement for short circuit racing for any long circuit regulars who came along.
It was soon time for the record breaking 200+ entry to come out onto the dauntingly fast track for practice with several engines going bang at the shock! Then at 12 noon the cars took to the track for the first race.

Let the Show Begin!
The first date of the five meeting series known as the Rolling Thunder Show was staged by MCS Promotions at the Arena Essex Raceway on Saturday 12 May 2001. It was an event which was bound to attract a lot of scrutiny with promoters and public curious as to whether MCS Promotions had come up with a viable format.
