Simon Smith, Old Hand, New Car
The Outlaw Hot Rod formula has been providing a realistic alternative to National Hot Rod competition at a number of tracks for several years, particularly at Arena Essex where the class provides great racing for many local drivers who wish to race National style machinery but don’t want to travel extensively. One such racer is Simon Smith – Outlaw #10. Story Matthew Bull.

Setting up with the Champ!
Following our test session last year with Dave Longhurst at Arena Essex we made the trip down to Worthing to have a look at the DLRD workshops in action. The only car in the workshop at the time was a 2.0ltr. No problem, we say, we can bring one along for you to look at! Story Malcom Foskett

Neil Soule – A Travelling Racer
Lechlade in Gloucestershire isn’t that close to any of the stadium raceways – though Swindon isn’t far away, and is more Autograss territory, with the notable exception of the Standlake Arena, the long-serving concrete raceway just out from Oxford. More surprising, though, than finding 25 year old racer Neil Soule all the way east at Foxhall Heath Raceway, Ipswich, on a Saturday night was that he was racing in the Stock Rods, in a very nicely turned out Corsa. Story Paul Huggett

Fast Starter Carter
Kim Carter had just been through something of a ‘purple patch’ when we spoke recently. An early season win at Swaffham in tricky conditions was followed up by a tidy win at Hednesford in the Open Championship meeting, which attracted over 40 Stock Rods to the fast asphalt bowl..

Cars on the Carpet
Paul Huggett finds a track where the car counts have got so big, they have to run weekly meetings just to get them all in – and where it doesn’t ever rain! With guys like model racing veteran Stan ‘The Man’ Demeza, on the books, the average goes up a bit, and so does the skill level. Stan was an early adopter of glow-plug engine propelled model F1 Stock Cars on outdoor car-park tracks back in 1978 and now also enjoys racing the electric propelled, smaller scale, variety indoors at the Hollington Community Centre, where the Hastings club meets every Friday evening.
