Ultimate Racer
The driver on pole position squints in his mirror just before the start of a 2.0 Hot Rod Final at Ipswich. “Only trouble is” he mutters to the writer through his helmet visor, “Mr. Smith isn’t many rows back is he?” He means one Andrew ‘Diggy’ Smith….

Rod Multi-Test
A couple of months back, we went to one of the open test days at Ringwood’s Matchams Park Raceway, and blagged rides for chief SC test-pilot Malcolm Foskett in five different kinds of ‘Rod’.
The debate about the difference in speed between the classes has been given extra impetus recently by Spedeworth’s adoption of the transponder lap scoring system, which has the added bonus of producing the laps times for all the competitors on the day and comparison between the formulas has been a fascinating study for some folk lately on the transponder operators web site. We had to rely on the good old fashioned stopwatch, however, to record Malc’s tour of duty, on a cold but sunny and dry spring day that tired him out – he really will have to hit the gym once that 2.0 Stock Car gets built, though his BabyGrand duties have kept him sweating we guess!

OLD and NEW and LARGE and SMALL
What’s the difference in speed and handling between a ‘Vintage’ 1970s rear engine Midget racer, a modern front engine Dastle-style machine, and a state-of-the-art tarmac BriSCA F1 racer? Do the words ‘Chalk and Cheese’ mean anything to us? It was fun finding out!
Story and photos Paul Huggett, additional photos Steve Terry.

C.O.T
NASCAR’S car of tomorrow completed a two day test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Charlotte on May 30/31 with eight teams bringing the new boxier cars to test, the most yet, with cars running in groups for the first time.
